We are historians, curators, book lovers and we Search The World.

James and Devon Gray Booksellers was born from the love of books, from the love of words and what they can convey, and from a respect for how words, printed on paper, folded in "leaves," bound in books, can be carried off into the world, forever to change history.

We are probably the only bookstore in the world devoted exclusively to books printed before the year 1700. The hundreds of books in our stock are at least 300 years old.

Our shop and gallery are open to the new bibliophile, the experienced collector, or the just plain curious. We enjoy taking visitors on a journey back to the renaissance, to explore the pages that are the foundations of western intellectual history. Our stock features the great works of old English Literature, such as Milton, Donne, Dryden and Chaucer, as well as the founders of Science and, of course, the great Explorers and Historians.

Many of our books go back to the first generation (the "cradle") of the printing press (incunabula). We usually have a dozen books printed before 1500.

We provide early printed books to scholars, institutions, and private collectors. Our specialties are English books printed before 1700 and books printed on the continent of Europe before 1700 in all languages and fields.

We are careful in our approach, knowledgeable in our field, attentive to our customers, and always strive to be precise in our descriptions.
