Octavo, 4 x 6.25 in. First edition. A-S8. This copy is bound in contemporary calfskin that has been expertly rebacked. The leaves are lightly spotted. Inside the front board the armorial bookplate of Edward Shipperdson is pasted. The signature of George P. Bidden appears on the rear endpaper.

In this work the author discusses the cause and treatment of scurvy. Walter Charleton (1619-1707) was an English physician who received his medical training at Oxford. At the age of twenty-four, he was appointed physician to Charles II. Charleton was a prolific writer who wrote and published on subjects ranging from anatomy, medical works and nutrition, to encyclopedic works of natural history, works on geology and fossils, and a description of Stonehenge.
